First of all –

I’d like to thank ALL the family members that contributed SO MUCH and put up with my questions and interviews while I was gathering information.  THANK YOU!  We know the information here is not totally complete or accurate and surely contains errors and omissions.  Any additions or corrections will be cheerfully accepted.  The purpose is to share our family trees.  Information has come from many of our family members, census records, marriage/birth/death records, bibles, letters, etc.  If you see something you’d like to correct or add, please let us know.  After all, this is a family project!

Ok, let’s start with our surname lists.  After the lists you will find some information about certain families.  I’ve put the surnames in alphabetical order so they’re easier to find.  It’s a work in progress and it’s never-ending (it seems).  I plan to update this with more information on families and hopefully some photos and other things to look at.  At the end is a list of things I’ve collected and if there’s anything there you’d like a copy of, please let me know.

Our family tree is also online at Worldconnect, where you’ll find charting features for descendants and ancestors that include lots of branches, twigs and leaves.  It’s a work in progress and is being constantly updated.  Click this link to go there – remember to check back often!

In the 1830s the family moved to Kanawha Co., VA close to the Kanawha River on the Mason Co. border (the part of Mason that became Putnam in 1848).  Five of their sons, Elias, William, John, David and Andrew are listed in the Putnam County census in 1850, all have their occupation listed as carpenter.

John Ferguson was born about 1814 in VA.  He married Julia about 1838 and they had 11 children.  They lived in Putnam Co., VA and then settled in the Cabell/Wayne County area about 1861.  In the 1850 Putnam Co. census John lists his occupation as a carpenter .  In the 1870 Cabell Co. census John lists his occupation as a blacksmith.  John died in 1903 in Huntington, Cabell Co. WV.  He is buried at Spring Hill Cemetery in Huntington, WV.

Lucien Ferguson was born in 1867 in Cabell Co., WV.  He married Mary E. “Mamie” Dunkle in 1892.  They had 2 children, Edward Osborn Ferguson and Beatrice Ruth Ferguson.  We feel that both Lucien and Mamie died about 1900, as their 2 children were left at the Davis Child Shelter in Charleston, WV around that time.  We believe by an uncle who was unable to take care of them.  Beatrice Ruth was adopted by a family from New York, but died later in a flu epidemic there.

Edward Osborn Ferguson was born 1892 in Cabell Co., WV.  He married Eva Mae Thomas in 1917 in Charleston, Kanawha County, WV.   They had 4 children: Beatrice Ruth, Ruby Mae, Betty Lou and Edward Lee “Bill” Ferguson.  Their eldest daughter, Beatrice Ruth Ferguson (named for her father’s sister), was born in 1919 and died in 1936, about age 16.  She was hit by a car as a pedestrian and severely injured.  She died from complications of the accident and/or from lung problems/TB.  Edward Osborn Ferguson worked for the NYCC RR in Charleston.  Edward and Eva were divorced about 1930.  Edward Osborn Ferguson then married Georgie Hiler and they had 2 children:  Bobby Jack and Lula Belle Ferguson.  Edward Osborn Ferguson died 1 Nov 1970 in Charleston, WV.  He is buried at Montgomery Memorial Park in London, WV.

Edward Lee “Bill” Ferguson married Catherine “Sally” Roy in 1949.and they had 2 children: Catherine Ann and Janyce Mae Ferguson.  They were divorced in 1955.  In 1955 Sally married Ron Wingfield.   “Bill” never remarried.  He spent many years in the U.S. Navy.  He was in the Phillipines in WWII. He also served on the USS Forrestal (the ship that had a terrible fire).  He spent a short time as a WV state trooper in the early 1950’s.  After retiring from the Navy in 1970 “Bill” made his home with his sister, Betty, and her husband, Warren”Buck” Macomber, in Bluefield, Mercer Co., WV.  He was a member of several organizations, including the Moose, Elks & Eagles.  He had attended Davis & Elkins College in Randolph Co., WV and Bluefield State College in Bluefield, Mercer Co., WV.

Edward Lee “Bill” Ferguson is the son of Edward Osborne Ferguson, son of Lucien Ferguson, son of John Ferguson, son of David Ferguson.

Sarah Patterson is likely related to Betsy Patterson, the daughter of a Baltimore merchant who married Jerome Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon Bonaparte.

William’s first cousin, James Edward Hanger, was the inventor of an artificial limb.  James Hanger joined the Churchville Cav. at Phillipi and spent the night with the company in a stable there.  The next morning, 6 Mar 1861, the Union forces attacked and a cannon ball entered through the stable door and took off his leg below the knee.  Amputation was completed by Union surgeon, reportedly the first amputation of the war. He served in Home Guards, Staunton during the rest of the war.  The Hanger limb was patented in 1871 and has since received numerous additional patents for improvements and special devices which have brought international reputation. Headquarters of the company moved from Staunton to Washington DC 1906

Joseph Roy probably served in Lord Dunmore’s War and fought at the Battle of Point Pleasant in October of 1774.  There is a Joseph Roy listed in the Capt. Wm. Nalle’s Company of Augusta Volunteers.  This battle was part of the Indian Wars.  In 1908 U.S. Congress officially labeled it as the first battle of the American Revolution.

In 1798 Joseph’s daughter, Pamelia, married Isaac Washburn, the son of Charles Washburn and Rebecca Lowther.  Rebecca’s brother was William Beamon Lowther, a Capt. of Harrison Co. volunteers who were in the Battle of Point Pleasant.   William Lowther became the guardian of Isaac Washburn after Isaac’s father’s death in 1782.
